The wheellbarrow was kind of dumb. If you have ever tangled with a wheelbarrow than you know the only thing it's better than is the barrow. The garden cart is vasty superior to both the barrow and the wheelbarrow. I suspect it is also superior for most purposes to the MULE, but the MULE is still a good idea. Personally I think walking isn't a good idea so I probably would strap my stuff to a bike, Viet Cong style. Where the terrain permits you could ride the bike.

Built one of those close to twenty years ago, though mine is one of those forward thrusting assault wheelborrow types it does have a shoulder harness. Made to be able to take a tent camp in and a deer out of miles of thick cover in the Upper Penninsula of Michigan it is more of a all-terrain unit than this one with a core of a heavy-duty wheelborrow wheel and oak struthandles and a framework of aluminum tubeing and aluminum mesh with lots of rubber straps. Can' t think of a better way to move a couple of hundred pounds through rough country without a mule. Mostly use it just to bring firewood out now.

Re: Bugging out on foot? Bring the kitchen sink!
I have to ask where this would be any good. Have these guys been to Eastern Canada or Alaska? I can see every step has a:
a) log b) rock c) stream d) swamp Good on a road, or the desert, I guess, where it's not sandy, steep or rocky, but if the ground's that good, you should ride a bike. Who was it said sling two cf-90 size packs over the bike crossbar and walk? To that end, http://www.bobtrailers.com/trailers/trailers.php Often need the narrow profile. Mtnsmith has been selling weatherproof duffles for these. TS |
Re: Bugging out on foot? Bring the kitchen sink!
It would probably do fine on game trails, though you would have to unhitch over logs.
Ever read about settlers heading for Oregon taking apart their covered wagons and lowering them down impassable canyons, then floating them across the river at the bottom, hauling them up the other side, and rebuilding them? And they had to get their oxen down and up in slings. But carrying enough to live takes some doing, and a backpack won't hold it. If you were walking out this mule would be a big help. If you are a good off road biker, the bob would be nice. |

I am thinking of keeping a mule and travois. Anyone know where you can get a travois?

Once you’re out of your dwelling and traipsing about trying to do your best imitation of an 1800’s mountain man ( or the equivalent of that, in whatever environment you happen to be in ) you’ll only need to survive for a few days - - because the odds don’t favor you making it longer than a week or ten days on your own with limited resources.
Sometimes it is funny reading some of the posts here. A few days ago someone mentioned packing a guide book along in their “bugout bag” ……. Seriously, if you need to turn to chapter 14 in order to know what to do next, you’re in serious trouble! |
